It is the beginning of a new era as far as Fijian art is concerned as the Government announced in the National Budget about a new National Gallery.

The announcement by the Minister of Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, was commended by local artist and curator, Irami Buli.

Mr Buli said the role of a National Gallery was to assemble the finest possible collection of national art, history and heritage.

Director of the Fiji Arts Council Peni Cavuilagi said it was really a dream come true for all of them.

“We were really happy and elated by the announcement as the site has been our dream for the past 10 years and we did not lose hope,” Mr Cavuilagi said.

He thanked the Government for understanding the importance of art and the need for a gallery to house and display important artwork.

“The biggest problem for our artists in Fiji is the space and we are glad that this permanent space has been provided by Government,” he said.

“And very strategically located space within the centre of the city.

“It will be another attraction for Suva City.”

Local artist, Josua Toganivalu, said being given a space was something that most practicing full time artists had been looking forward to for a long time.

“Having a national art gallery also means that our locals here in Fiji can get to see and appreciate world class art pieces on display just like in other national art galleries overseas,” said Mr Toganivalu.

Meanwhile, Mr Cavuilagi has confirmed that the funding from Government will enable them to conduct scoping work for the premises of the new gallery location.

“The Fiji Arts Council will need to move as soon as possible to occupy the building and continue with the discussion and development work required,” Mr Cavuilagi said.

He said the art collection at the current office, Procera House, were deteriorating and the sooner they move them, the better.
