A close knit family in Raiwaqa village, Mavua, Nadroga is mourning the loss of their father and grandfather who is alleged to have drowned in the Sigatoka River on Thursday.

Dead is Esala Kamunaga, 66, who police said was found floating in the river next to Mavua Village along Kavanagasau Road.

His wife, Verenaisi Kamunaga, 59 said she last saw her husband around 9am before he headed to their plantation to water the chilli plants; he had taken his favourite spear as well.

“When he took his spear, I did warn him not to go into the river since it was pretty cold but he loved the river,” Mrs Kamunaga said.

After a while Mrs Kamunaga thought to pay his husband a visit in the plantation but by then his nephew turned up to relay the tragic news.

“I then visited the Raiwaqa Health Centre there he lay motionless and even till now I cannot believe that he would leave me just like that,” she said.

The late Mr Kamunaga was the district representative (mata ni tikina) for Mavua; this year was his fourth term.

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the discovery was made by a 54-year-old farmer also from the same village.

She said attempts to revive Mr Kamunaga were unsuccessful.

A post mortem will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death before his funeral on Friday.

He is survived by his wife, a son and a grandson.
