The vocational students of Ballantine Memorial School ended their weeklong celebration yesterday.

This programme is under the new banner Technology and Employment Skills Training Programme (TEST).

The technical subjects include Agriculture, Technical Drawing, Home Economics and Vocational Studies. The students displayed their handiwork at the school in Delainavesi outside Suva.

“We had students portraying models, making charts, cooking for the whole week and today we are having modelling and other items,” said programme co-ordinator Elenoa Naivalu.

The TEST programme took over from the Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in 2013 as part of a strategy by Ministry of Education to change the mind set about TVET.

“During this programme, students are able to creatively portray what they have learnt in their classes,” Ms Naivalu said.

She said the Home Economics students displayed the garments they had designed and stitched together.

“This is a good exposure for these students. They are better trained and ready for new job opportunities that they will take in future,” she said.

Almost 300 students have been part of this programme.

One of the major objectives of introducing TEST by Ministry of Education was to ensure that it provided employment skills training to meet the needs of the local and global market.

Several schools in the country have also incorporated the programme.
