It was a sad day on April 27, 2017 as news filtered through of the death of one of Bollywood’s biggest icons of yesteryear. His name was Vinod Khanna.

Known to many as an extremely talented and handsome individual who commanded the silver screen with his star presence and was second in popularity only to the Superstar himself Amitabh Bachchan.

Born in October 1946 into a middle class family Mr Khanna had what you might called a charmed upbringing where he was well educated and was financially secure thanks to his parents hard work and planning.

Once he had graduated from University with a Commerce Degree he was drawn to Cinema after watching various epic movies of the 1950s and 1960s.

Standing at six feet tall and looking every inch like a Greek god, he certainly had the height, the looks and the magnetic personality to be a box office sensation, all he needed now was a chance to prove himself.

He was spotted by Sunil Dutt a veteran actor who was looking for raw and exciting talent to debut in his upcoming film and Mr Khanna fitted the role like a hand into a glove.

Movie career

He made his acting debut in 1968 and never looked back, he managed to go from strength to strength over the next 15 years producing hit after hit.

Mr Khanna starred in many movies alongside another Bollywood Icon Amitabh Bachchan and there chemistry on the silver screen was intoxicating.

Two notable films they starred in were Amar Akbar Anthony and Muqaddar Ka Sikander.

Both movies were massive blockbuster hits and have become cult films to watch for all generations.

Amar Akbar Anthony and Muqaddar Ka Sikander were so successful they became the highest grossing Indian movies worldwide for the year 1977 and 1978 respectively.

The film Muqaddar Ka Sikander in particular is a wonderfully inspiring film that shows many facets of human relationships and tragedy.

In 1982 at the peak of his film career and with the adulation of millions of people and with both fame and fortune at his feet Vinod Khanna threw it all away.

For the next five years he would join a cult movement with its leader being the infamous Rajneesh who was also known as “The Love Guru” and followed him blindly with his new age teachings.

He was mesmerised by this new religion and could not be talked out of joining the cult and once in the commune he carried out such mundane jobs as cleaning dishes and worked as a gardener for his new found Guru.

After five years Mr Khanna left the commune disillusioned with the so called “love Guru” and attempted to get back into films, but his time was gone and a new generation of stars had already arrived.

He entered politics for a while in 1997, there he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and won his seat.

Later, he became Union Minister for culture and tourism then in 2002, he was became Minister of State, he lost his seat in 2009 but won it back again 2014.

Away from work Mr Khanna has four children, his two sons Akshaye and Rahul are from his first marriage and both are in the film business, Akshaye in particular has become a well-known and respected actor in the industry. He also has a son Sakshi and daughter Shraddha from his present wife.

The self-imposed exile to join the cult group cost him his marriage, his family, his friends and all the things he truly treasured but he has managed to rediscover himself and once again build ties with all of his siblings before his death.

Vinod Khanna will best be remembered as a wonderfully gifted and handsome man, with great screen presence who was a true Bollywood star for almost 15 years.
