ANALYSIS:Honesty, Service, Attitude Keeps This Taxi Company Riding High

Having the right attitude, good strong moral standards and doing the right things are essential ingredients for success.

In the competitive world we live in it is very easy to use shortcuts to achieve what we want even though they are fraught with all kinds of danger.

Some people manipulate the system to achieve their goals quickly only to get into trouble with the law.

Some of the successful prosecutions by FICAC (Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption) indicate that there is a fair amount of this going on in our society.

FICAC has been doing a sterling job in creating public awareness about the negative impact of crimes of dishonesty and abuse for pecuniary gains.

Recently I have started using the services of one of the biggest taxi companies in the southern division. Many of its drivers are overwhelmed with the news that they can now apply for their taxi permits and drive their own taxis.

They can become active participants to strengthen their personal economy by running their own business.

Sometimes if you want to know what’s happening out there in the community you can get an idea from these drivers. They work in shifts – 24 hours a day, seven days a week, transporting people from diverse backgrounds.

As it normally happens, there is a lot of sharing of stories during these journeys. And the stories range from the mundane things of life to serious political issues.

These drivers work hard for their living and some of them work the graveyard shift. But their motto is service and they particularly treat their contracted customers as top priority. Recently, two valued customers forgot some of the valuable items when they got off.

When inquiries were made hours later the owners were informed they were being kept at one of the bases and they would drop them at the preferred addresses.

What a relief when you can do business with a transport provider you can trust.

How many times have you heard stories of items being forgotten and lost in taxis?

Incidentally, this is an iTaukei taxi company and its popularity is rapidly spreading because of its efficient service.

It is debunking a stereotype that the iTaukei cannot successfully run a business. The drivers, you can tell, are converted to modern business practices.

They are thriving on honesty, loyalty and service.  You do not have to wait for too long to get a taxi at any time of the day or night. And no wonder their services are now much-sought after.

They have learned that business cannot mix with culture and traditions. They have drawn the line on the sand that cultural pressures will not interfere with the daily running of the business.

They have endured criticism from those that hold them in contempt for not honouring cultural obligations. They know they are doing the right thing by separating business from culture because their business  continues to grow.

The power of positive thinking has also helped them focus on what is important and what matters the most and not worry so much about trivial issues.

If this is the way the taxi industry is moving forward, then its future looks bright.
