Josevata Ravula was proud to be among the first batch of students to receive their certificates after graduating under the agriculture programme at the Nasau Training Centre (NTC) in Sigatoka.

The Ekubu, Vatulele, native was handed his certificate by the Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu, during the graduation ceremony.

The 17-year-old happens to be a school dropout student from a prominent secondary school in Sigatoka since last year.

This year he enrolled in the agriculture programme and completed his Year 10 education.

He had been advised by one of his teachers to pursue an education with the Nasau Training Centre.

“I did not look back.” He said despite the challenges, he continued on and was now getting recognition to achieve his goals.

“I find it easier in this model of learning and will put it to a real life situation,” he said.

His guardian Kalaveti Veremalua, 45, has been taking care of Josevata since he was born. Josevata’s mother had remarried and moved on.

“He has been with our family and we are proud that he has managed to get this far with his education. A teacher from his previous school advised us that he will do well in this field so we followed this step,” Mr Veremalua said.

Josevata said he would return to his village and continue planting and sell produce at the Sigatoka market and nearby resorts.

Another graduate, Teupua Lutelu, 22, became the first Tuvalu student to graduate in this programme.

“I feel honoured and really excited to graduate today, but there were many challenges like waking up in the cold morning, but its all paid up,” she said.

“Now I look forward to finding employment in the agriculture sector back home or get involved in agricultural business.”

The course takes six months to complete and covers many areas of commercial agriculture.
