A Labasa family living near the Dalomo Sawmill waste timber stockpile had to be evacuated by National Fire Authority yesterday when the fire threatened their property.

Northern Divisional Police Commander Senior Superitendent of Police (SSP) Verani Nakauyaca confirmed that the family were safe.

“The incident happened during the midday and we are not aware at this stage the cause of fire as investigation continues,” SSP Nakauyaca said.

NFA was on the site to douse the fire.

Indra Wati, 44, a housewife and her son were inside their home when she noticed thick smoke near her house.

“Within minutes the NFA came and tried to contain the spread of fire.”

“Thank God no one got injured,” she said.

Meanwhile, attempts to get comments from sawmill owner Mohammed Shamsood proved futile.
