Three students from Marist Champagnat Institute in Suva have been awarded scholarships by the renowned local dance company, VOU.

For Cheyenne Raihman, 14, she always loved dancing especially to hip hop music when growing up and the award seals her determination to be recognised with what she likes best.

“I had recently attended a workshop organised by VOU and during one of the sessions we were told to show our dance skills,” Cheyenne said.

“I like dancing to music from artists like Jason Derulo, Chris Brown, and renowned choreographer, WildaBeast Adams on You Tube,” she said.

Cheyenne enrolled into the VOU classes last week and is looking forward to her first class.

“I’m thinking of a career in the dance and art field.”

Vocational student, Jope Naimila, 20, also  plans to take up dancing as a career.

Mr Naimila has been dancing for over a year now with VOU and his efforts and talents have been recognised by VOU with a scholarship this year.

“I was shocked and happy at the same time when I was awarded,” Jope said.

He loves dancing and just wants to keep practicing to learn more of the various styles of dancing.

“I really want to learn more of the traditional style of dancing,” he said.

He is appreciative of the support of his family especially his mum and VOU for the lifetime opportunity.

VOU director, Sachiko Soro said the scholarships were given on a three month basis.

“We have to see how the students perform, so consistency and passion is what we are looking for,” Ms Soro said.

Ms Soro said if the students show all this drive in their classes then their scholarship will be extended.
