FPCL Needs More Funds For Removal Of Derelicts

The Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) has undertaken the massive task to remove derelicts in Suva Harbour.

However, FPCL chief executive officer (CEO) said – “The only drawback is the cost of removal as FPCL do not have sufficient funds allocated to remove all wrecks.”

He said most of the wrecks were more than seven to eight years and FPCL was unable to locate the owners of these derelicts.

As for the derelicts with known owners, he said they had already taken action as per the attached list.

He said they had already initiated legal action against the owner of Sullivan and had even issued removal order to Government Shipping Services (GSS) to remove “Tug 7”.

“Therefore, Southern Phoenix is not the only case.” However, he said unlike in the past FPCL was now taking stern action against the ship owner /s as they did not want the derelict list to increase any further.
