Navy Competition To Test Skills Of Sailors

Sailors of the Republic of Fiji Navy went through a series of training exercises at an internship competition at the naval base in Togalevu, outside Lami, yesterday.

Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy Captain Humphrey Tawake said the competition was conducted annually to test the skills of the officers in teamwork and leadership.

Captain Tawake said yesterday’s exercise involved more practical training following Monday’s theory classes.

He said the event assesses the efficiency, capability and fitness of the officers.

One of the training officers Lieutenant Ben Salacakau said the navy internship skill competition is conducted to test the skills of the officers and to have them compete for one of the major trophies before Fiji Navy’s anniversary celebration every year.

Lieutenant Salacakau said six teams took part in rope climbing and swimming to test their teamwork, endurance and strength.

The officers will today take part in a rugby competition at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

A clean-up campaign is also expected to be conducted by the Fiji Navy but the date and venue is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile on Friday next week the Fiji Navy will be celebrating the 42nd anniversary of its services to the Fijian people.

It is expected to be another day of sea blue naval officers and families wearing blue  attire coming together to celebrate the special occasion.

The Fiji Navy was established in 1975 and was known then as the Naval Squadron Royal Fiji Military Forces.
