Overpayment of Social Welfare Benefits Highlighted in Reports

Social welfare benefits were overpaid because officers failed to review the cases.

Relatives and guardians of children who turned 18 continued to receive care and protection allowance.

The anomalies were highlighted in the 2016 Auditor-General’s Report.

These were some of the cases:

  •  Allowance was being given to four children. Two were over the age of 18 in 2016. For six months, allowance continued to be paid resulting in a loss of $480
  •  A child was paid allowance of $40 but the child had turned 18 in 2014. 22-monthly allowance had been processed which resulted in an overpayment of $880
  •  The child turned 18 in 2015 but payment continued costing $560
  •  Six such cases were highlighted and in one case a loss of $6240 had been incurred due to failure in review and monitoring of cases.

The ministry accepted that this was an ongoing challenge for the ministry and that the number was so great that it is “impossible to review all cases within a year.”
