Tragedy happened in Nadi yesterday

An early morning inferno has left ten people homeless in a settlement near Nawaka in Nadi yesterday morning.

The 9.30am fire completely destroyed a two-bedroom timber, and corrugated iron house with furniture and appliances.

Total cost of damage is around $21,000. House owner Lai Tubuna, 69, a market vendor at the Nadi Municipality market said luckily there was no one at home when the fire started.

“It is a sad morning for us as we are not sure how our day will end today,” the Lomanikoro, Rewa, native said.

“We have been living here for the last 10 years but this incident has made my hope bleak,” Mr Tubuna said.

His daughter Wainikiti Baravi, 32 who lives two houses away from the house was getting ready to pick her child from the neighbouring school when her neighbour yelled out to her that black smoke had engulfed the home.

“The house was locked and we could not save anything, I think the fire started from the porch,” Ms Baravi said.

Two National Fire Authority fire trucks arrived at the scene to contain the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes.

Police confirmed that a joint investigation with the NFA is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
