New sets of wood carving tools and machines were yesterday handed to six recipients under Government’s Forest Subsidy Assistance.

Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau, who stood in for Minister for Forests Osea Naiqamu, said wood carvers had been neglected for a long time in terms of real assistance.

He said Government assistance was targeted at key areas which needed help –areas where specific opportunities existed for economic growth.

“This programme therefore provides the leverage that is needed in order to open up the door and create opportunity to those with the skills and key potentials of wood carving in order to lift them up to another level in production and efficiencies,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

He said the programme would further promote the effective use of forest resources at the grassroots level.

“This assistance will act as a springboard to those with a dream to move forward and realise their dreams, further contributing to poverty alleviation and further creating business opportunities within our rural and sub-urban population.”
