Matthew Wheeler, 25, leads after the first day of the 31st Annual Fiji International Game Fishing tournament at The Pearl Resort in Pacific Harbour yesterday.

A member of Team Reelaxin, the Australian angler landed the biggest wahoo weighing 23.5 kilogramme followed by Scott Davies of Team Golden Eagle (16.2kg) and Johnny Lassan of Team Nanuku (15kg).

Wheeler enjoyed his first Fijian experience.

“I was not expecting to catch the biggest, it was an awesome first day, first time in Fiji, I’m happy to be here,” Wheeler said.

“From my first day catch, I think fish in Fiji better than Sydney.

“Crossing my fingers for another good catch in the remaining two days.”

The competition continues today and ends tomorrow.
