A strong start is vital for St John’s College Under-18 team as they face Nasinu Secondary School in the first quarterfinal in the Coke Zero Deans Trophy at the ANZ Stadium, Suva today.

Head coach Sefanaia Takape told SUNsports yesterday they’ve been playing catch up rugby in their previous games which they cannot afford against Nasinu.

“Our main focus this week is mental toughness,” he said.

“Most of the time we’re playing catch up rugby but our aim this week is to have a strong start from kick off. No more playing catch up rugby.”

The team from Levuka last reached the Cup quarterfinals in 2013 and this year they hope to go one better with the support from the Ovalau community.

“Everyone is excited back at home. Ovalau will be empty, everyone will come to the capital to cheer on the boys.

“It was also good to see the old scholars turning up in numbers at our training ground and cheering us on,” he added.

Takape believes it would be a challenge since Nasinu are the Southern Zone champions.

“Nasinu will be tough and we respect them but we will stick to our game plan,” he said.

Bolstering St John’s would be former national U18 prop Jacob Daveta and Tongan native Brian Minnoneti.
