The Vodafone Fijian Under-16 football team, for the first time, will represent Fiji at the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) U16 Women’s Championships in Samoa on August 4-25.

The girls will be in good hands with experienced coach Marika Rodu in charge.

Switching from coaching men with the ‘Delta Tigers’ of Rewa to guiding young women, Rodu has pushed the girls to perform to his level.

“The sad thing is that I will leave Rewa behind.

“It’s a new job and new players but my expectation is still high,” Rodu said.

“I know this is a different lot of players and I will not be able to compare them with my team but I have not dropped the bar for these girls.

“I maintain the bar at the level I have always kept it and the girls need to push themselves and get them out of the box and that’s my priority.

“The girls need to get out of their shell and show that they can compete for Fiji at international level.

“They are more open now, they were more reluctant to gel in with me because maybe I was a male and the position I hold in soccer.

“But I had to come down to their level and make them understand that we will be going through this together and get them to really open up.

“When they are more open they are able to express themselves on the field and give me an insight into the way they play and how they perform.

“At the same time they needed to understand my needs and what I expected of them so everything worked out in the end.

“They have learnt a lot in terms of technical skills and they are learning every day.”

Fiji play Cook Islands, American Samoa, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea with the main focus to get out of the pool stages.

The team will depart the country next week Tuesday.
