Strata Type Holdings Way To Go

Strata title holding and strata type home ownership is the way forward for Fijian home owners.

And, projects such as the ones in Legalega and Yako in Nadi for which Government has set aside money to assist iTaukei landowners is one of the ways this can be achieved.

The landowners are set to make millions out of developing residential lots but if same lots are sold for strata type holdings it would very much benefit the thousands of young Fijians who want to own homes.

The strata type holdings mean each lot will have a separate lease and title as is the case in many overseas countries.

These titles and flat ownership can also be used as collaterals in banks.

We do not have to reinvent the wheel. This is already happening in many countries and such arrangements are quite successful. We just need to have the will to make this happen.

And for something of this sort to be successful in Fiji, we need to leave politics out of the scheme of things. We do not need politicians and their cronies reaching out to landowners with half truths and even outright lies.

The reason why hundreds of acres of land, which was used for sugarcane farming, is today barren in Labasa is because those who were supposed to have the best interest of the landowners at heart were busy playing politics in 1999.

The top rungs of the then Native Land Trust Board who had gone around Labasa and nearby areas to advice landowners not to renew leases need to be avoided like plague.

They did not have the best interest of this country at heart back then and they do not have the best interest of the country at heart today.

FijiFirst Government has set aside millions of dollars for iTaukei landowners and if savvy landowners are ready to look beyond politics and are not taken for a ride by bitter politicians, they will be making millions of dollars and solving the issue of housing in this country.
