It will be a new challenge for Vodafone Fijian football team vice-captain Margaret Fatima Tabua as she embarks on her journey to Samoa for the 2017 OFC Under-16 Women’s Championship on August 4-25

Though it came as a shock for her to be vice-captain of the team, Tabua is ready for the task.

“To be honest, I did not really think that I would be vice-captain but I am happy that I have been trusted enough with this position,” she said,

“I have been playing football for six years and this has got to be one of the highlights of my life, being chosen to represent my country.

“I am nervous and I do not know what to expect as this is the first time an U16 team is going to compete in such a tournament but I am welcoming the challenge.

“It was a bit difficult for me during the trials as I could not train properly because I had problems with my knee.

“But I did not want to show what I was going through, I just prayed and pushed on.

“I am really looking forward to travelling with the team and doing our best out there on the field.”

No one could be more proud of the 15-year-old Cathedral High School student, than her mother Veronika.

“I am really on top of the world right now that my daughter is not only representing her country but as the vice-captain,” Veronika said.

“The biggest challenge she had to face was balancing her school with her training. For any student who is involved with sport, they know how difficult it is to balance the two.

“She stayed committed and realised that this is something that she wants to pursue and I told her that she needed to work hard and she did.

“As a mother, I am so proud of what she has achieved and I can only pray and hope that she does her country proud.”

The team depart for Samoa on Tuesday.
