The recent road upgrade along Visama Road, outside Nausori, will soon end years of struggle by residents due to poor road conditions.

The work is being carried out by Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH), which is contracted by the Fiji Roads Authority to carry out road maintenance in the Central, Eastern and Northern Divisions.

Visama vegetable farmer, Raju Prasad said the upgraded road has given them easy market access, even on rainy days.

“This is a great relief to farmers like me because it makes it … easier for us to transport our produce to the market because bad road condition has always been a big challenge to us,” said Mr Prasad.

Fulton Hogan Rural East Area Supervisor Iliesa Tuikenatabua said the roadwork included the clearing of vegetation and blocked drainage, and the grading of a kilometre of Visama Road “to restore road formation with particular attention to drainage”.

Mr Tuikenatabua said the road was dusty, narrow, slippery and a risk for motorists during heavy downpour before they worked on it.

Visama road serves more than 200 residents along with dalo, beef and vegetable farmers.

Drivers now have a safe solid metaled road while pedestrians have a safer walking area after the removal of vegetation.
