What began as a hyped up event turned out otherwise during the SODELPA Western Rally march through Lautoka City yesterday.

Only a handful of supporters turned up for the event which was much talked about on social media and other platforms.

The march, which began at Shirley Park, grew to only around 50 people. At the Namoli Village Hall where a meeting was held about 150 were present.

SODELPA leader Sitiveni Rabuka claimed SODELPA would win the elections and rule with compassion.

However he also mentioned that there were still many who looked and remembered him as the one who carried out the 1987 coups.

He said he noticed a lot of shopkeepers looking at him as the person who carried out the coups.

“That is the past and is gone,” he said.

Mr Rabuka said having the rally in the West signified a new beginning for the party.

“We will make Fiji free again and when we win the elections we will lead by compassionate leadership.”

SODELPA Parliamentarians Viliame Gavoka and Aseri Radrodro were present at the rally.

A special commendation was given to the Fiji Police Force and Lautoka City Council for allowing the march and the escort that was provided through Lautoka City.

Mr Rabuka said: “We were given the opportunity today to carry out the rally and we thank the Police for this.”

He said it was heartening to know that the military had declared that they would support the outcome of the general elections scheduled for next year.

“I have come to inform you about the party and what we are doing.”

Some issues raised by members during the meeting were bringing back of Ratu Sukuna Day and the Queen’s Birthday holidays.
