A man, who was involved in violently robbing a family of Nausori at their house in 2015, has been sentenced to 12 years and 10 months imprisonment.

In sentencing Leone Rokomaraivalu, Judge Justice, Salesi Temo told him that he and his friends had disregarded the family’s right to enjoy the comfort of their home.

Justice Temo said Rokomaraivalu would pay for this crime by losing his liberty.

The accused with two others on May 28, 2015 had broken into, Deo Kumar’s house in Visama, Nausori, at around 2.30 am.

During the invasion, he and the others hit Mr Kumar’s wife on her head for raising an alarm to wake her husband.

Mr Kumar was also threatened and abused not to intervene.

The men made away with $9000 cash, jewelries and gadgets all to the value of $32,347 and also used Mr Kumar’s vehicle to get away.

Rokomaraivalu was convicted for one count of aggravated robbery and one count of theft.

He admitted to being involved in the crime and also being the driver of the stolen vehicle.

In his sentencing, Justice Temo said that people were entitled to treat their homes as their castle.

They go home to rest sleep and cook again for the next day to go to work, he added.

“You and your friends had no regard what so ever for this family’s right to enjoy the comfort of their home but broke into their home, ransacked the home and stole $32000 worth property,” Judge Temo said.

The accused had been in remand since he was first produced in court in 2015.

He has 30 days to appeal.
