Man Found Guilty For Attempted Murder Of Ex-Wife

The High Court in Suva has found a 47-year-old taxi driver guilty of attempted murder and act with intent to cause grievous harm to his ex-wife.

Judge Justice Raiyaz Hamza yesterday convicted Narayan and gave time to the prosecution to file its sentencing submission by August 10.

State prosecutor Kimberley Semisi told the court that their sentencing submissions would include a list of previous convictions by Narayan.

Ms Semisi said that she would also present the impact statement of the victim, the ex-wife of Narayan.

Justice Hamza told Narayan to make his mitigation by August 21.

The case is set for hearing of sentencing submissions on August 22.

During the trial, Narayan defended his case on the grounds that he had committed the act accidently and in self-defence.

However, the prosecution had proved otherwise, Justice Hamza said.

Justice Hamza said he was satisfied with the evidence produced by the prosecution which included the evidence of the witnesses, the victim, daughter of the accused and current husband of the victim. Narayan had stabbed his ex-wife, Shakindra Devi, on the face outside the Shop N Save supermarket in Nakasi in May last year.
