Editorial: Nurturing The Spirit Of Enterprise And Innovation

Small micro enterprises (SMEs) will grow the Fijian economy if nurtured well.
Allowing Fijians the opportunity to create their own industries and employment brings a sense of accomplishment and pride.
SMEs also provide a range of services vital in our daily lives. They matter in a developing economy like ours. While some may grow into larger firms, others can tap themselves on the shoulder for at least trying to do something.
Government support towards such initiatives is crucial. The construction work that now begins on the new Laqere Market will support at least 500 vendors who fall in the SME category.
This underscores Government’s commitment to empower and provide a platform for Fijians to grow economically – especially in the heavily populated Suva–Nausori corridor.
Once completed, the new market will serve as a modern and functional hub of economic activity in Nasinu.
The cost of building the complex stands at $4.3 million. It is the largest Government funded project in the history of Nasinu Town.
People living within the Suva–Nausori corridor will have direct access to fresh produce.
Other Small micro enterprises should start thinking about other goods and services they can offer at the market.
Having a vibrant SME sector is vital for our growth.
