In the spotlight… National football coach Christophe Gamel

The Vodafone Fijian football coach Christophe Gamel has named four overseas based players in his a 30-member squad for the international friendly against Indonesia on September 2.

England based Scott Wara, New Zealand based Shravan Sharama, Krith Kumar and Roy Krishna, will be joining the team as well.

While naming the squad last week, Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel said Gamel had made it clear that no one’s place in the national team was fixed. “Everyone will need to prove them to be considered for the national team,” he said.

“The Fiji team will be embarking on a tour to Indonesia and the national coach with his coaching staff has named the players for the tour.”

He said Gamel had decided that he would be looking at talent and those players who had represented Fiji did not have a cemented place in the team unless the player had reached the level that Gamel had set and maintained it.

“That is really good to see and because of that the performance of the national side is improving, doesn’t matter which district you are from, as long as you prove yourself to be in the national team.”

Patel said that the players would need to prove themselves to be considered for the next friendly game against Hong Kong.

The team marches into camp from August 19 in Ba.
