Healthy Workers Perform Better, Supervisors Told

Managers in the North have been reminded that a healthy and safe work environment was vital for a company to thrive.
Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment officer Newal Kishore gave the reminder during a one-day course on Health and Safety for company directors, managers and supervisors in Labasa yesterday.
Mr Kishore urged the 16 participants to put themselves in the shoes of their employees when dealing with Occupational Health Safety.
“Most of the workers spend more than nine hours at their workplace on a daily basis,” Mr Kishore said.
He said the health of the workers was important because their performance depended on their health.
“If their health is affected then they would not be able to work, and if their work environment is not healthy and safe then their health is affected. As employers, try to put you in their shoes,” he said.
“We all want talented employees and on the other hand need good employers. And this is where our reputation comes in, if you’re well reputed then that is great but if you’re failing to provide a healthy working environment then you lose potential workers.”
Those who attended the workshop included administrative officers, managers and directors from bus companies, construction companies, institutions like the TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care and the Fiji National University.
