The boom in construction is widespread.

In the North, work is on the rise. Companies like Metromix Concrete Fiji Limited, a division of M.Y Group Limited, are noticing this demand.

Recently the company opened its first centre in the North,  along Vunimoli Road in Labasa.

It is the company’s seventh centre and comes after steady growth in Viti Levu.

The company specialises in ready mix concrete.

Mohammed Yaseen owns the company which was previously owned by Fletcher Construction of New Zealand.

“We decided to open a centre in Labasa to create more employment and to serve the community of Vanua Levu,” Mr Yaseen said.

“This centre is the first for us in the North and we are planning to open two more centres and cement manufacturing.”

The company employs 90 staff throughout Fiji – three currently  work at the Labasa centre.

“We have invested $872,000 inclusive of buying a piece of land to set up our centre in Labasa,” Mr Yaseen said.

“We are injecting this investment in Vanua Levu to support Government’s Look North Policy.”

Metromix Concrete supplies ready mix concrete and concrete products such as culverts, v-drains, curbs and concrete blocks.

“We sell products directly from our centres so that the public gets the most benefit,” Mr Yaseen said.

He now owns two quarries with Metromix producing concrete.

With the expected increase in the demand of concrete materials, more Metromix Concrete centres will open soon, Mr Yaseen said.
