Two top cadets of Montfort Boys Town in Veisari want to join the Republic of Fiji Military Forces after they complete their studies this year.

Tomu Nawani, 16, of Naisausau, Namara, Tailevu, was named Best Platoon Commander yesterday, while Kitione Waqavatu, 17, of Mataso, Nakorotubu, Ra, was presented the Baton of Honour.

Nawani’s mother, Vitalina Radinisiwa, said: “I couldn’t hold back tears after seeing my son in his cadet uniform. I ran up to him and hugged him for his achievement.”

Meanwhile, Waqavatu was honoured to be presented with the Baton of Honour during the award presentation.

“It was shock and surprised when my name was called out, but I am truly thankful. I thank God, family, teachers and friends for contributing to my success so far,” Waqavatu said.

Waqavatu’s father, Veresi, said they travelled from Ra yesterday to witness their son’s cadet passing-out parade.

“We were not expecting my son’s achievement today. But we thank God for the life of our son,” he said.

The two cadets said the six weeks of training taught them valuable lessons – discipline, hard work and the strife for excellence in education.

Waqavatu and Nawani are studying automotive engineering and this year will be their final.

All 120 students were part of the school’s annual passing-out parade, witnessed by family and friends yesterday.
