Labasa Market fish vendors are frustrated that the relocation of their stalls will affect their business.

The new fish stalls are completed and will be commissioned soon before fish vendors will move in.

A vendor Iliana Ikaniliwalala said the new location was inconvenient in so many ways.

“For starters, we would be far from the ice plant and the distance requires us to pay the wheelbarrow boys to transport our ice about five times a day,” Ms Ikaniliwalala said.

“And then the stalls are too small,” she said.

“Fishing boats dock closely near our current location and we get fresh fish. The new location is congested with so much extra costs for us.”

The newly-structured fish market is located opposite the Labasa Market Police and about a five-minute walk from the current location.

Ms Ikaniliwalala said their customers will be inconvenienced.

Special Administrator Labasa and Savusavu Towns Vijay Chand declined to make a comment.

Minister for Local Government Parveen Bala said he would meet with the vendors when he goes to Labasa this week.

It is understood that the vendors have written a petition to the Labasa Town Council airing their grievances.

There are 40 stalls at the new location.
