Climate Change is not only the responsibility of the Government but every member of the community who cares about life, preservation and sustainability.

Speaker of Parliament and chief guest Dr Jiko Luveni made the comment at the 2017 Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus Festival cocktail at the Aquatic Centre grounds yesterday evening.

The theme for this year’s Hibiscus festival is ‘Climate change: telling our own narrative’.

Dr Luveni said that the Vodafone Hibiscus Festival is always filled with entertainment, colourful arrays of fashion, food, bright lights and rides that attract the vast throngs of school children and their families.

She acknowledged that the Hibiscus festival was the longest running festival in Fiji since 1956 and that it has remained vibrant and meaningful every year.

“I believe people are working so hard to make a premier festival of the South Pacific and indeed the mother of all festivals in Fiji that originated from a one night event only at what was known then as the Suva Town Hall,” Dr Luveni said.

The queen, teen and king contestants gave short introductions of themselves at the start of the event.

Chairman of the Hibiscus Event Group, Hirdesh Prasad said that the theme was chosen in their obligation towards the Fijian Government’s national commitment to COP23.

“With the support of the Fijian Government we are working with Carpenters Fiji Ltd, Water Authority of Fiji and the Suva City Council on a waste water treatment system that will be used during the week of the festival.

“We will also have environment marshals who will be walking around ensuring that the festival premises are kept clean,” Mr Prasad said.
