Sugar Mills Are Doing Well: Chandra

The three sugar mills have crushed a total of 650, 677 tonnes of sugarcane compared to 514,511 tonnes for the same period last year.
This was confirmed by chief operating officer of Fiji Sugar Corporation Navin Chandra.
“Sugar that has been produced from 650,677 tonnes of cane is 68,110 tonnes compared to 51,489 tonnes compared to the same period last year,” Mr Chandra said.
He also said that the average of Tonnes of Cane to Tonnes of Sugar (TCTS) was above 8.6.
“TCTS to date is 9.55 compared to 10 in 2016. This is above target of 8.6 and the mills are getting more steady supply,” he added.
Mr Chandra added that all the sugar mills were doing well in terms of crushing this season.
A total of 650,677 tonnes of cane has been harvested but FSC has targeted a total of 2.04 million tonnes to be harvested this year by the end of November.
Meanwhile, Mr Chandra had also urged farmers to supply more green cane and refrain from sending burnt cane to the mills for crushing.
He said: “We want people to focus on getting pure, high quality cane to the mill for crushing.”
