Miss Lions Club Labasa Paayal Chand, who is vying for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North, will advocate on combating environmental negligence.

The 24-year-old teacher of Immaculate Conception College in Bua says do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin; beginning marks the condition perfect.

Originally from Vunicuicui, Labasa, Ms Chand a second year student of the University of the South Pacific Labasa pursuing Bachelor in Education Psychology believes that a national that destroys its soil, destroys itself.

“Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to people,” Miss Chand said.

“The environment is where we all meet, where all have a mutual interest; it is the only thing all of us share,” she said.

“What we are today is the result of our own past actions; whatever we wish to be in future depends on our present actions.

“Therefore, each of us is responsible for our actions.”

What was your reaction when you were approached to be a contestant?

Miss Chand: I had mixed feelings of excitement and gratefulness. The realisation was also there that this was a remarkable opportunity for me to showcase my talents.

What was your motivation for entering this year’s carnival?

Miss Chand: Opportunity knocks the door only once, thus grabbing that opportunity was a tremendous decision I made with the assurance and inspiration from my family and friends. I would achieve an improved version of myself.

What are you looking forward to at this year’s festival?

Miss Chand: Great learning experiences. A very fruitful one with various prominent people to meet.

Has it ever crossed your mind while growing up that you would one day be part of a beauty pageant as such?

Miss Chand: Growing up watching ‘princesses’ movies and fairy tales from granny always had me imagine what it would be like to be one. Well this question for sure is being answered right now.

Who is your greatest inspiration by far? Why?

Miss Chand: My greatest inspiration, well not just mine but my entire family’s inspiration, my mother. She is my role model. She inspires me and motivates me to grow without any barriers. It seems to me that she looks at life as a challenge and wholeheartedly intends to seize the day everyday.

What would you like to take away after this year’s festival?

Miss Chand: New experiences, increased level of self confidence, a self- actualised person, and pride and honour for my family, friends and sponsors who are standing with me.
