President Konrote Urges World Council Support For COP23

The President of Fiji Major-General (Retired) Jioji Konrote has called for the World Council of Churches to support Fiji’s presidency at the 23rd Conference of Parties (COP23).
Major-General (Ret’d) Konrote made the request during a courtesy call by the WCC General Secretary Reverend Olav Fykse Tveit on Friday.
Discussions of the two leaders included the integral role of spirituality in Fiji and the Pacific and how an authentic Fijian and Pacific voice on climate change would need to be articulated.
The Norwegian theologian shared with the President how the World Council of Churches, in particular the churches of the Pacific have been at the forefront of Climate Change and Climate Justice advocacy for the last three decades.
Reverend Tveit met with the head of Fiji’s COP23 Secretariat, John Conner on Saturday to discuss more practical aspects of the WCC, Pacific and Fijian churches contribution to Bonn and beyond.
