Preparations begin for Firewalking ceremony

Peparations for the annual fire walking ceremony at the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangams Raj Maha Mariamman Temple at Howell Road in Samabula, Suva, began on Sunday.
The ceremony, attracting thousands of Hindu devotees, celebrates the Arulmigu Sri Raj Maha Mariamman Annual (thirunaal) Bramhotsavam, the most important event of firewalking at the temple.
TISI Sangam Suva president Ravin Swamy said this was a moment when devotees gathered and showed the traditional ceremony that had been practised in India and all over the world.
Mr Swamy said the climax would be on Sunday.
Devotees will conduct their fire walking ceremony by walking on the hot charcoal under the power and blessings of goddess Devi Kali Mata.
This week, they will listen to the tales of the goddess and enact her life and ‘thirkuttu’ dance before the fire walking ceremony.
