The Vodafone Fijian Secondary Schools Rugby 7s tournament is set to kick off on Friday at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

A total of four zones (Eastern, Southern, Western and Northern) made up of four schools each will be participating in the U15, U17 and U19 grades for the boys while the girls division will be competing in an open grade.

Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby president Setareki Merekula said after a lapse of three years, they were happy to get back on track in holding such an event.

“We are really looking forward to an exciting tournament because we have not had the finances to run the tournament until now.

“The reason we set up a seven-a-side tournament is because not all districts can field 15s team because they may not have all the players.

“We are excited because we get to see players showcase their talents.

“We also have the girls featuring in the tournament in the Open grade which is important because we do not only want to focus on the men.

“Once we get more numbers in the girl’s category, we can then think about having a format like the men’s.”

Merekula said they were aiming to make this an annual event if they could secure funds.
