Three Kadavu men found guilty of drug cultivation

Three Kadavu men were convicted in the Suva High Court yesterday for cultivating 951 plants of marijuana.

Earlier, two assessors found the first two accused guilty and third accused not guilty. The third assessor found all three accused guilty.

Suliasi Bola, Elesio Tukana and Mikaele Raivasi had pleaded not guilty.

In his judgment, Justice Salesi Temo said he found that the accused’s Police statements were given voluntarily.

However, in evidence they said that their statements were not given freely.

Justice Temo said at no point did the trio lodge their complaints with Police or Corrections officers.

He also added that no injuries were found on them to match their claims.

Consequently Justice Temo agreed with the third assessor’s guilty verdict. The three men will be sentenced in the High Court today.

It was heard in court that the amount of marijuana found was the second highest ever recorded in Fiji.
