Twenty years of memories came crashing down as a mother and son watched what was left of their home that was burnt in a fire.

Shivneel Aditya Ram, who stayed with his mother in a three bedroom house, said that the fire could have started from a diya that was lit in the prayer room at the home in Vuci South, Nausori.

Mr Ram said that his mum had lit the diya at 7pm on Sunday before leaving for a prayer session at a neighbour’s house.

“I was awakened by a sound around 8pm. When I got up I saw that the prayer room was on fire and the fire was coming towards my room.

“I quickly ran out of the house and with the help of my neighbours tried to stop the fire but we couldn’t.

“It spread right through the house,” said Mr Ram.

Mr Ram said his father built the house and at that time it was a small house.

After his father died in 2013 they had extended it.

His mother Urmila Devi used to stay home and look after her older son, Krishneel Ram’s two-year-old daughter while Mr Ram works as a real estate agent at Suva Realty Management Limited.

“I am seeking financial support to rebuild my house,” said Mr Ram.
