Twenty five staff members of the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa are volunteering their working hours to help refurbish classrooms in Nadi District School.

Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa director of rooms Sunny Goo said they were keen to help schools around Nadi to provide them with better schooling facilities.

Ms Goo said it was vital for these students to learn in an environment that they felt comfortable in.

“It is always wonderful to invite some of the staff to volunteer their hours especially with their kids in school as well as for us as a company. It is always good to give back to the communities and it’s really a good team work and initiative,” she said.

“This year we are continuing with the community project and it’s actually quite fun hanging out as we don’t really get to hang out since we work in different departments.”

The refurbishment includes painting of black boards, replacing of window frames, repairing of roofs and electrical appliances and painting of the school block.

The hotel so far has helped schools like St Andrews Primary School, Ratu Navula College and Rakiraki Methodist Primary School.

Ms Goo said they also had a specialised engineering team to determine work that was needed and to ensure that they have the right material if there was any big repair to be done.

The refurbishment of Nadi District School is a two-week project.

“We started on Monday, our purchasing team and engineering team had a look at the project first and everybody came in to help,” she said.

Ms Goo added that they would in the future expand their assistance throughout the Nadi schools.

The cost of the refurbishment is approximately $15,000.
