Proposed Christian State An ‘Act of God’, Court Told

A sedition trial was told on Friday that a proposed Ra Christian State was an act of God.

Sulueti Waqalala, one of the 16 accused, had made the statement in her caution interview which was read out in the High Court of Lautoka. She was allegedly sworn in as Communications Minister in the proposed government. She said in her caution interview that their act was spiritual.

State witness, detective Suliasi Dulaki, read the caution interview.

The 16 accused are alleged to have been behind the planning of a so-called Ra Sovereign Christian State in 2014.

They face sedition charges and have denied the offences.

They are: Ratu Epeli Niudamu, Salaisa Malani, Sereima Rokodi, Nanise Nagusuca, Waisea Duailima, Isikeli Kabakoro, Laisiasa Mocevakaca, Emosi Toga, Waisake Racaca, Samuela Ligabalavu, Mikaele Gonerara, Josefa Natau, Sulueti Waqalala, Ulaiasi Rabua Tuivomo, Apolosi Qalilawa, Ilisapeci Natau.

It was alleged that the proposed separatist state was being done according to an ancient traditional script or ‘vucu’ and was what the proposed state’s “Attorney-General” Mereoni Kirwin had also referred too.

Josefa Natau, who was the proposed “Foreign Affairs Minister” had his caution interview also read.

Defence lawyers Kevueli Tunidau and Aman Ravindra Singh both questioned Police witnesses Detective Suliasi Dulaki and Corporal Amani Sautuwere.

Mr Tunidau had questioned the validity of the proposed government’s documents that were presented as evidence.

Corporal Sautuwere maintained that the signatures contained in the documents were originals and not photocopies.

The trial continues on Monday.
