The Fiji Barista of the Year competion will introduce the ‘Latte Smackdown’ as part of its competition this year in November.

Yees Cold Storage Seafood Limited Sales Manager, Laite Cavalevu said the competition would bring all top baristas from around the country together.

She added the ‘Latte Smackdown’ was something new they would introduce for this year’s competition.

Ms Cavalevu said it would make the competition exciting for the baristas.

The winner of the competition will be given prize money of 500 dollars and pampers.

She said four hotels would be given an art and they are expected in a matter of seconds to make one shot of coffee with the art in it made out of coffee cream.

Ms Cavalevu said for barista who weren’t good in making art would be involved in another activity.

“Some of the baristas are not very good at art making but they are very good in making coffee, so we will try to fit in those who can’t in something else,” she added.

Ms Cavalevu said the best baristas from around the region would be chosen to compete in November.

The competition, she added would give local baristas standard as the world’s coffee culture continues grow.

I would also help the tourism industry, she said.

“We need to give tourists the best of everything,” Ms Cavalevu said.

She added there were lot of skilled barista in Fiji that weren’t recognised so they planned to send some of our local baristas overseas next year to gain international exposure.

Ms Cavalevu said the competition would be held in November in conjunction with the Moffat Salon Culinaire 2017 hosted by the fiji chefs association.

She added the competition would take the baristas to another level.
