Good Neighbour Better Than Friend Far Away: Berends

“The fun day is a great opportunity to know each other and to meet each other and I think this a great initiative,” said Nasinu Town Council chief executive Lute Berends.
Nasinu Town Council chief executive Lute Berends reminded the Makosoi community in Kalabu to be the best neighbours in their community.
“It’s better to have a good neighbour than to have a friend far away,” Mr Berends said.
Chief Guest Mr Berends was speaking on Sunday to about 100 people from the Makosoi community in Nasinu at their community fun day organised by the Kalabu Police Post.
Speakers who took part at the gathering included executives from save the Children Fiji, BSP life, the Fiji Police Force and the National Fire Authority.
The idea to have a Fun day was conceived by the people in the Makosoi community before they approached their Police community post in Kalabu to assist in organising the family fun day.
The community has participated in the neighbourhood watch programme for the past 32 years.
Mr Berends said that Fiji was all about relations and people and having a good time which he thought were important values compared to his home country, The Netherlands in Europe, where it was all about time and money.
“The fun day is a great opportunity to know each other and to meet each other and I think this a great initiative,” Mr Berends said.
Save the Children Fiji executive Ioane Nawaikula raised awareness on child abuse.
“No child deserves to be abused physically, mentally or emotionally and children learn best when they feel safe at their own home,” said Mr Nawaikula.
