Officers’ education to curb illegal fishing: Naqali

The training of 30 Department of Fisheries and Naval officers in boarding inspection would set the platform in curbing illegal fishing in Fiji, said Deputy Secretary for the Department of Fisheries Sanaila Naqali.

“The platform has now been set for more collaborative efforts in curbing Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing and other fisheries and security related operations,” said Mr Naqali.

The officers completed the one week training on boarding inspection at the Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva.

Speaking to the officers at the closing ceremony last Friday, Mr Naqali said the one week training would enable them to carry out dockside boarding and inspection.

“You have also set the platform for more compatibility in areas such as operations, systems and procedures,” he said.

Mr Naqali also thanked the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) for partnering with the ministry to carry out the training in terms of facilitation and technical expertise.

The participants went through training on the International Legal framework for fisheries, Port State measures, Inspection of on-board documentations, National Monitoring, Control and Surveillance tools.
