Four Fijian students will make their way to the United Kingdom for further studies next month.

270 scholars have studied in the United Kingdom under the Chevening scholarship programme.

510 scholars have studied in the UK under the Commonwealth scholarship programme, which is fully funded by the British High Commission.

The scholars were awarded their scholarships during a lunch meeting with the British High Commissioner to Fiji, Melanie Hopkins, at the High Commissioner’s residence in Suva yesterday.

The following three Fijian recipients have been awarded Chevening scholarships. Emily Moli will be pursuing her Master’s in media, Communication and Development. Amalaini Tikoduadua will pursue her Master’s in Science majoring in international risk management and finance. Dr Mike Kama will be doing his Master’s in Control of Infectious Diseases.

Jone Raituva is the lone recipient of a Commonwealth scholarship. He will be pursuing his Master’s in Climate Change development and policy. Silivia Atiola from Tonga is also a recipient of a Chevening scholarship.

Ms Hopkins said the Commonwealth scholarship is an independent foundation but the British Government is the sole funder for the programme.

“We see these programmes as an investment to the future of the countries concerned.

“Since its inception in 1983, the estimated Chevening scholarship programme funded by the British Government, delivered 270 altogether across the nine countries. Each year, we aim to send 10 to 15 scholars.

“The commonwealth scholarship inception since the 1960’s, we estimate 510 scholarships were awarded across the South Pacific, approximately 45 scholarships per year.

“For those of you departing, they will have the most incredible year with receiving world class knowledge,” Ms Hopkins said.

Chevening Scholarships in Fiji are awarded to outstanding emerging leaders to pursue a one-year Master’s degree programme at any UK university.

They provide a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

A Chevening award offers financial support along with the opportunity of becoming part of the highly regarded and influential Chevening global network.

Applicants from Fiji can choose any course of study, but we particularly welcome applications in the following fields:

  • Climate Change
  • Economic Development
  • Environment
  • Good governance
  • Human Rights
  • International Relations
  • Public Administration
  • Sustainable Development
