Arrears For Nasinu Town Council Reaches $9m

The rates in Nasinu have not been increased since the establishment of the council in 2000.
Despite that in 2016 only 54 per cent of the current rates were paid for. The arrears accumulated in the past 14 years has now come to $9 million.
Nasinu wants to improve on service delivery for her residents. Garbage collection, grass cutting, drainage cleaning and services provided by the office can be done better. That, however, costs money.
Employees, trucks, machinery, disposal of garbage and public services have to be paid.
Despite reminders property owners do not come forward. Paying rates is not a choice.
It’s a statutory provision, a moral obligation and a contribution to the community you are part of.
That is why Nasinu Town Council is going to put more energy on rate collection. The debt recovery team is strengthened and will visit everyone.
If necessary 30 days notices are being and will be served. Of course we hope owners come forward so we can make arrangements and settle the rates properly.
With this active approach Nasinu aims for:
- 75 per cent rates collection on 1/7/18;
- 90 per cent rates collection on 1/7/19;
- 100 per cent rates collection on 1/7/2020
- 75 per cent of the arrears to be settled
Nasinu wants supreme service delivery for everybody, but it takes two to tango.
