The Fijian Drua rugby squad and officials presented their i-tatau (traditional farewell) to the President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote at Borron House, Suva yesterday.

The 26-member squad fly out of the country tomorrow to make their debut in the Australian National Rugby Championship (NRC) where they face Brisbane City at Ballymore Stadium on Saturday.

“I would like to congratulate you all in your selection for the Fijian Drua team,” he said.

“The Drua is known as the most finely crafted Fijian canoe and it’s the largest and the fastest. And it’s always considered as the national choice for travelling long distances especially for battle.”

The President said the Drua signifies strength to overcome any challenge that faces on its voyage across the vast Pacific Ocean. “I’ve no doubt that the choice of the name is aimed at encouraging you to draw strength from the usefulness of the Drua canoes.

“If you combine this by seeking divine inspiration from the Almighty God, I’ve with every confidence that you will succeed with your aim to do extremely well throughout the competition.”

Konrote said he was pleased to see that the team is made-up of local based-players.

“I also acknowledge the hard work the coaches have put towards the preparation for this high level competition.

“We’re aware how important rugby is to our nation and this is one sport that can bring all of our people together especially as we are now the Olympic champions in sevens rugby.”
