New Water Supply For Ra Settlement

The people of Lau settlement, Nalawa district in Ra, have much to celebrate.

Safe drinking water and sanitation has been a major problem for over 20 years.

Now their prayers have been answered with the opening of a hygienic water supply and sanitation system.

The Rotary Pacific Water project was funded by VaiWai®, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Cate Pleass, Marketing Director of Pleass Global Limited, and Mr Frank Stanford, Country Welfare Manager of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, officially commissioned the new water supply on Monday 28 August.

Before the new water supply, the people had a daily trek to wash clothes and collect water in barrels from the Wainibuka River.

Community water security is now ensured by a gravity feed system that brings water direct to People’s homes. This consists of a 5 metre concrete dam, a 10,000 litre storage tank and tap stands near the houses. A back-up 10,000 litre tank was also installed to ensure continued

water supply in times of natural disasters and drought. To provide safe potable water, a slow sand filtration unit has been installed on each of the 10,000 litre tanks.

In addition to the new water supply, two new flush toilets, with off-set double pits, have been constructed. This provides everyone with better sanitation for improved health and wellbeing.

Construction, project management and installation for the entire project was carried out by Rotary Pacific Water.

Rotary Pacific Water is grateful to the three sponsors VaiWai®, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for making the provision of water supply possible.
