Be Humble, Treat People With Respect: Justice Gates

Law graduates of the University of the South Pacific were advised yesterday not to forget those who had selflessly gone out of their way to assist them.
Chief Justice Anthony Gates, while delivering his address to 27 lawyers who were admitted to the bar yesterday, said their achievements brought with it greater responsibility.
“I hope you remain humble, and that you treat the people you will now encounter in practice, court staff, media, witnesses, and fellow counsel with due courtesy and respect. Respect begets respect,” Justice Gates said.
“Avoid cutting corners. Never use clients’ cases to fight your own battles, achieve your own prominence, or to play politics.”
He also advised them not to let their ego get in the way of their work.
