More Law Awareness Campaigns For Clarity

The Fiji Law Society will have more awareness campaigns for its members and members of the public for clarification of law processes.
The society’s president Laurel Vaurasi said while their membership has grown to 263, they were mindful of the complaints before the Independent Legal Services Commission regarding lawyers.
Some of the issues they intend to look further into are:
Whether young lawyers have full knowledge of how trust funds operate and whether misuse of funds is due to ignorance;
What role can the society play to disseminate important information to the general public; and
Hold awareness programmes on ethics to the community at large.
With regards to complaints before the Independent Legal Services Commission, Ms Vaurasi said: “We are concerned and we are happy that he (Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum) raised it. We want the Law Society to get on board and get the programmes done so that at the end of the day our objectives are achieved in serving our members and that the public are protected.”
“We have taken note of what the Attorney-General has said you would see that we have resurrected ourselves in the last four years and that the membership has increased and so what we will be doing is more awareness programmes,” she said.
