Top Execs Lead 7s Bid

Top rugby administrator Greg Peters has been appointed to prepare Fiji’s bid to host a leg of the World Sevens Series in 2020.
Peters will be working with Fiji Rugby Union commercial management manager Brian Thorburn.
Peters, the former chief executive officer of SANZAR, the body which operates Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship competitions, resigned in 2015 and is now CEO of the Argentine Rugby Union.
The duo each have more than 20 years of experience in rugby administration.
Peters worked with Wellington Rugby Union and was part of Wellington’s bid team to host a leg of the World Sevens Series.
Thorburn had vast experience with the Australia Rugby Union being a commercial director for 11 years and was heavily involved in the original bid for the 2003 Rugby World Cup as well as running domestic matches.
FRU chief executive John O’Connor said they were grateful to have experts prepare Fiji’s bid to World Rugby.
“FRU is blessed to have acquired the skills of two experienced sports administrators to do the bid to the very highest professional level,” O’Connor said.
Thorburn is excited about assisting Fiji’s bid.
“We are incredibly excited with the opportunity to assist FRU and Fiji deserves a leg, given our Olympic success and our dominance in the sport in decades.
“As we build our bid, other parties who wish to involve can talk to us. We going to need a lot of help from a lot of people.
“This is a critically important process to go through. We’ve got to paint a picture and portray a story on how we will do this and make it viable. We need a good team to do it,” Thorburn said.
The duo will be working on preparing our bid to World Rugby which is due in February, 2018.
