Despite the absence of his parents during his journey to complete his studies, Apisai Tavakia, graduated with a Certificate in Cookery at the Nabua Sanatan College grounds on Monday.

Being the youngest of five siblings, Mr Tavakia said his hard work had finally paid off.

“I took up this course because I like cooking and I’m the only one in the family taking up a course in this kind of field and I didn’t really want to take up any other field,” said the 22-year-old from Sabeto, Nadi

“I enjoy learning things like how to prepare meals so I encourage other young people to take up this field and it’s a great field to pursue, but my plan after this is to try and work for one of the hotels or maybe go overseas.”

Meanwhile elder sister Sereima Gavidi said she was grateful for her younger brother’s accomplishment.

“Both our parents are deceased so it’s a big achievement for him after one year of sacrificing, I have seen today the fruits of his labour when he received his certificate.

“I believe that this is the Lord’s reward to Apisai for all his hard work and I am grateful to the Lord for his provision, because something that I have wanted him to achieve for a long time has finally happened,” she said.
