The Labasa Sugar Mill has crushed 400,000 tonnes of cane which is almost half of what was supposed to be crushed this year.

This was confirmed by Fiji Sugar Corporation chief operating officer Navin Chandra.

In terms of the Labasa Mill for this year’s crushing season, it is on track.

This is because the Tonnes of Cane to Tonnes of Sugar (TCTS) is close to 9.2 while the target has been set to 8.

Mr Chandra said the target for the Mill is to crush one million tonnes of cane.

They also aim to be the first mill to hit one million tonnes of cane and, according to him, the workers have accepted the challenge.

A challenge they currently face is how to increase the tonnes per hectare in the same plot of land.

Previously, the mill had produced one million tonnes of cane in Labasa from over 22,000 hectares of cane.

Mr Chandra said there are fertile lands in Labasa that need to be looked out for to plant more cane.

Seventy-five tonnes per hectare is targeted to be planted this year.

He added that if 50 tonnes and not 55 tonnes is produced after planting the new crops, then they are not reaching the optimum outcome.
